Monsoon Cargo Losses Often Begin Before the Truck Moves
Share India Editorial Team
When cartons arrive wet, the weather gets blamed first. Yet many water-damage losses begin with worn tarpaulins, floor gaps, poor pallet height or cargo loaded against a leaking wall.
Insurance matters after the loss. A short dispatch routine can stop the loss from happening and create a clearer record if it does.
Inspect the vehicle and the packaging
Check the roof, doors, floor and side panels before loading. Match packaging to the route and handling, including the possibility of standing water, repeated unloading and outdoor storage.
- Use pallets or suitable dunnage to lift vulnerable goods.
- Seal and label moisture-sensitive packages clearly.
- Photograph the empty vehicle and completed loading.
- Record vehicle number, seal number and dispatch time.
Plan for the interruption
Flooded roads can strand cargo for days. Give drivers an escalation contact and rules for safe parking, route changes and emergency unloading. Monitor weather and avoid forcing a time-sensitive delivery through a closed route.
If damage is discovered, separate affected goods, reduce further loss where safe and notify the relevant parties promptly.
What to remember
A two-minute vehicle check and six clear photographs are modest habits. Across a full monsoon season, they can be worth far more than the time they take.
Coverage, exclusions, limits and claim requirements vary by insurer and policy. Read the customer information sheet and policy wording before you buy or renew.
